Supernatural: International design, S.F. Home-San Francisco Chronicle

Have you ever flipped through the pages of a magazine-like live etc., Skona Hem or Elle decoration UK overseas ly and becomes enamored with a brilliant piece of furniture or accessories, only to discover that it is not available stateside?

Thanks to Claudia Mahecha and Robert Allen, there will soon be able to change. Supernatural, pars new showroom and interior design studio in Potrero Hill, offering a carefully curated selection of international designers and manufacturers.


Mahecha studied product design and later while working at Limn in San Francisco, started dabbling in interior design.


"I was meeting people, mostly Europeans, who find it difficult to hire interior designers, which was a good fit with their modern aesthetic," she recalled. "Most designers wanted to work with antiques and steering them in the right direction.


As East Bay native took on multiple projects, she realized that she needed help, and Allen happened to additional qualifications ("he is organized and methodical way," said Mahecha). So she quit his day job with Limn and branched on his own with his eponymous design practice, Claudia Mahecha Design.


The couple would eventually spend a year in Miami before he returned to the Bay area, as they are seen as the ideal locale to launch the supernatural. Palette neutral 2.000-square feet of space (think white, gray and natural wood finishes) is marked with the requests of the Green-the most notable is an 8 by 8 foot wall installation made of moss.


"We created this showroom to San Francisco," said Allen of their modern yet warm approach to design.


Mahecha, which also continues to run her interior design business, added: "pieces we choose reflect the sensitivity of the information here, as far as craftsmanship and construction".


Dutch-based Christien Meindertsma design is simple yet admire. She knits its Urchin Poufs with needle size of a broomstick ($ 930 small, $ 1,600 medium, $ 3,054-sized), which results in outsized masks. It is a modern twist on a traditional crafts. Even in the most modern option injected material (wool) and the texture of pouf a homely touch.


Supernatural also carries lines by e15 (if designers include Philipp Mainzer and Stefan Diez), MDF Italia (Jean-Marie Massaud, Neuland Industriedesign) and Riva 1920 (Studio piano, Mario Bottas, Mathias Hoffman, Karim Rashid).


Contemporary art come walls and shelves in the showroom is also available for purchase. Supernatural has partnered with prominent San Francisco galleries feature artists such as Deborah Oropallo, Todd Hido, Brion Nuda Rosch, Darren Waterston, Erik Scollon, Scott Kildall and Victoria Scott. A number of intricate origami sculptures were created by a local artist is referred to only as "Jeffrey."


Mahecha and Allen predicted establish relationships with interior designers and architects as well as residential clients. And they recognise that their victims "will develop, based on what people respond to," said Allen.
