Shruti Marathe, an MBA from symbiosis College, created his profile on LinkedIn business network two months after it had completed its course. "I wrote about my college details projects and even had working recommendations posted by seniors, who guided me during my internship," she recalls. A few days after, Marathi has received a call from a company, National Instruments, to come for an interview. "Soon, I had two letters of offer, in my hand" reminds Marathe, who now works as an executive sales with the Star group.


Career networking portals and social media have become imperative for the first time job seekers. Either through Facebook, LinkedIn, blogs and Twitter, people are seeking potential employers through other sources online. Take, for example, professionals such as Nikhita Arora, who works with the media of Madison. She bagged her existing job through LinkedIn. "I have maintained my profile on career as ApnaCircle and LinkedIn networking sites". In College, we were told repeatedly how recruiters are using social media to hiring freshers, "she said." Arora, who had moved to New Delhi for another job, was interviewed by its existing business after he reviewed his LinkedIn profile. He offered a new job in Mumbai within 24 hours to speak with him. Now, she uses her LinkedIn profile to launch business meetings with contacts that it has made online.

Hari V Krishnan, country manager, LinkedIn, India, said: "If the talent was a currency, LinkedIn is the Exchange where we connect talent with opportunity on a large scale." He made a point when he adds, "most of the professionals that offer jobs on LinkedIn are not job seeking, they are passive candidates.


Samar Narayan, 26, a web designer and illustrator graphic, also found his first employer on Facebook last year. "I use Facebook not only to keep on friends, but also to present my work." My friends often comment on my work and that became my recommendation in real-time to recruiters.


Twitter and Facebook, while that still serve as tools of communication between friends, work as arrays of public display, where users can share information related to employment through its pages, groups and applications, while the search engines such as TwitterJobSearch.com transformed site of 140 characters per post in a field of hunting promising work.


Hareesh Tibrewala, CEO of the Social wave, hired at least three people with Twitter. He said: "find us Twitter very effective in hiring for entry to mid-level professionals, while LinkedIn comes handy when hiring senior people". Tibrewala feels microblogging, social networking sites can be a powerful means for small businesses and recruiters to expand their list of potential job candidates. He said, "Twitter is not the alpha, being for all, but it is an affordable and inexpensive way for a small business, try to make an impact to reach a wider audience, share their job opportunities and build their brand."
