As the United States social networks reached a saturation point, the days of double-digit growth area, says eMarketer.
Today 63.7% of the population online at the United States uses social networking sites. In the next two years, growth will be slower, resulting in slightly more than 3% increase in users.
Means that the slowdown in the growth of social networking sites will have to find other ways to keep users in a more competitive environment, says Debra Aho Williamson, senior eMarketer and author of the new report, analyst "US network use: 2011 demographic and behavioural social trends".
More young users remain the most active social networkers, with 90% of 18-24 years are expected to participate this year.
"In 2011, social networks will need to cement their relationships with their users, including those of the ages 35 and older, to keep their game," added Williamson.
"Marketing and media specialist companies can contribute to this effort by creating experiences compelling user that encourages people to stay connected to social networks so that they can access experiences, agreements, or content that they are not able to find nowhere elsewhere."
